|Round 1 Complete
First weekend is over, the rankings are rather silly at this point. I'll post a complete rundown after the next weekend.
You've basically got a huge tie for first, among every 1-A team that beat another 1-A team. (Side note: I'm not going to use the stupid FCS/FBS notation. :) )
And last place is shared by the two 1-A teams that lost to a 1-AA team.
Michigan, of course, widely publicized. And Rice, losing to Nichols State.

|And here we go again....
College football season kicks of this week, and my rankings system is all ready to go. Stupid pre-season polls...Can't we get rid of them, please?

|One of my favorite past times: Ranking College football teams!
Since there are are already thousands out there, I thought to myself...why not make another one? So here it is. If you're not a college football fan, this probably will be of no interest, but here's how I did it. It, like so many other systems, is iterative. That is, you follow a set algorithm to create a base ranking, then it is modified under certain rules and you get a new ranking. Rinse and repeat untill you're happy. Here' how it works:
1. Rank all teams by Win Margins. (Wins minus Losses).
2. Assign a "Win Value" and a "Loss Value" to each team. This represents the value of defeating this team, and the penalty of losing to this team. Formula for this: W-Value = 120 - Rank and L-Value = Rank - 1. So beating the number 1 team is worth 119, while losing to them costs you 0.
3. For each team, add up the win value of the team they defeated, and the loss value of the teams they lost to. Take the margin (Wins minus losses again)
4. Re-Rank. You have completed 1 iteration of the algorithm.
Now re-assign win and loss values based on the NEW rank and repeat.
Two valid questions:
1. How do you know when to stop?
Anwser: I perform a correlation between consecutive rankings. When the correlation is at least .999, you stop. In my case, this happened on the 4th rank.
2. What about division AA teams?
Anwser: They are all counted equally, as rank 120, and do not change. So beating a 1-AA team is ALWAYS worth 0, and losing to them costs you 119. This is rather iffy, as we all know, not all division 1-AA schools are equal. I just don't see any other good way around it. Simply doing the same algorithm with the 1-AA teams won't work for two reasons. One, everyone knows Appalachian state isn't in the same league as any 1-A team. Despite their gaudy 14-1 record, they lost to N.C. State for crying out loud. And two, they play division 2 teams, and you get the same problem again. So it's much easier just to lump them all together.
So without further ado:
2 Southern Cal
4 Louisiana St.
5 Ohio St.
8 West Virginia
10 Boise St.
13 Notre Dame
14 Oregon St.
15 Boston College
16 Wake Forest
21 Virginia Tech
22 Brigham Young
25 South Carolina
28 Georgia Tech
29 Penn St.
29 Texas A&M
35 South Florida
38 Texas Christian
39 Washington St.
40 Arizona St.
41 Florida St.
44 Texas Tech
45 Cent. Michigan
47 Oklahoma St.
50 Southern Miss.
52 Kansas St.
56 San Jose St.
59 Middle Tenn.
63 Troy St.
64 East Carolina
65 Ohio U.
67 W. Michigan
75 Mississippi St.
77 Michigan St.
78 N. Illinois
80 North Carolina
81 Southern Meth.
82 Arkansas St.
84 N. Carolina St.
86 Air Force
88 New Mexico
89 Florida Atlantic
90 Iowa St.
91 Fresno St.
93 Cent. Florida
97 Texas-El Paso
99 Ball St.
100 Colorado St.
106 San Diego St.
107 New Mexico St.
108 Bowling Green
109 Louisiana Tech
110 North Texas
113 Utah St.
114 Nevada LV
117 E. Michigan
118 Miami, Ohio
119 Florida Int'l
Some notes: Poor Boise St. They were a base 1, stayed 3rd after 1 itteration, but weren't able to hang on. No losses help, but they just don't have the wins. And Wisconsin...wow. Started 3, stayed in the top 10 for a few itterations, but eventually fell all the way to 19th, behind Arkansas (A team they beat). USC, even with two questionable losses, moved into 2nd by the 2nd ranking. They played one HECK of a schedule, and would no doubt be 1 if they hadn't lost to UCLA or Oregon St. And with 3 teams in the top 6, the SEC sits atop as kings.
One of these days I'll try to compute an average and median ranking, based on conferance.
Lastly, Notre Dame. Started 17th, and actually went up to 14th by the last iteration. Not as bad as everyone complains that they are. Current Mood: happy

|Back in Nebraska
I'm scared. Really scared.
I have to teach my own class this year at Nebraska...I hope I do a good job...it's going to be so different than the Reci's I did last year!
On the other hand, I was terrified of that, and it turned out just fine.
On another note, I'm exhausted. Traveled back here, went to several meetings, still trying to get my room set up again...

|Laura + Dinner = Exciting
Tonight Laura came down to my parents home and we had dinner. It was exciting! We had Steak, Potatoe, and a Salad. Then we played Bocce (I won 11-7), Shang-Hai (My dad won, I didn't get down the last 4 hands!), and 4 games of pool (I won the 9 ball she won the 8 ball). I sure had a nice time, and I think she did too.
After the All-Star break the Reds seem to be playing pretty well, I'm still optismtic about their chances this season.
"Open the door!"
"Where's the key!"
"Forget about the key, unlock the door!"
"I can't unlock the door without the key!"

Well, not so much. Yet anyway. But it started feeling blocked so I went to the doctor, and now I'm on an Antiboitic and Decongestion. Oh well. No pain though.
The World Cup finals have been decided, Italy wins a thriller in Extra Time over Germany and France gets a PK for the 1-0 win over Portugal.
Reds...keep losing. What else is there to say? :)
Oh and Laura is coming for dinner on the 14th! That's so exciting!
"I don't think we survived that crash, coach!"
"...How'd you guess?" Current Mood: sick

|Go-Gos and such
So Friday morning I drove to Oxford. Why? So that I could go with Laura to see the Go-Gos of course!
Aside from the concert being louder than I anticipated, I had a great time. And I actualy knew 5 of the 17 songs they played! (In addition to the 4 that Laura had played for me, they also did Cool Jerk)
In the morning we then went to Shedd Aquarium, which was awesome. Sea life is so much prettier and cooler than land life. I expecially liked the Jelly Fish.
Finally, the hotel room number we stayed at was 314! That's so fun! :)

I just got my results from the Qualifying exams...amazingly I qualled both. I'm in shock.
Reds lose another to the Mets, so we split the series 2-2. On to the Indians.
The US lost to Ghana on a, let's say....questionable penalty kick. Maybe next time?
With the US eliminated, my hopes now lie on Ghana, Mexico, Korea, and Australia. (i.e. the Non European/SA teams)
Tunisia technically still has a chance, but they need to beat the Ukraine today, and they don't look too sharp yet. AND they're down a man now! Good luck Tunisia!
Yesterday I tried to learn a few songs on my guitar. "Don't Speak" by No Doubt and "The Call of the Ktulu" by Metallica.
Ktulu is a fairly hard song, but I think I got it sounding ok.

|I'm still alive?
Yes, it's true. Despite the 11 day Haitus, I'm still alive. I have no excues to why I haven't posted either. Just pure laziness. So sue me.
World Cup Action: The 3rd round is about to begin, but half of today's matches are irrelevent, since group A has been decided allready.
The Reds won last night, 4-2 over the Mets. Is it just me, or so we play better on the road than at home? Who knows... Complete game for Arroyo, which is good, because our Pen needed the break.
Yesterday was my Grandmother's birthday, so we had a little party at my parents house. We played a card game called "Ramole" and I won $1.50. Bwaha....
I had the strangest dream last night...it had my old Advisor from Xavier in it. But it's already starting to fade from my memory.
"What? It was supposed to send you to a dimension of infinite pain...not to the next room!" Current Mood: excited

Today the World Cup kicked off. Germany whipped Costa Rica 4-2 in the opener. US begins play in the "Group of Death" on the 12th vs Czech Republic. It'll be a hard road, but the US has a pretty good team this time around.
The Reds extended their win streak to 8 games with a 7-1 shellacking of the Cubs. First place by a half a game over the Cards? Pinch me, I must be dreaming.
I finished The Stand yesterday. The last lines of the book:
"Time is such a wheel that no man can stand about it for long.
And it always, comes back to where it started, in the end."
*shudder* Such a bleak picture of man's futility in the face of evil. We can Stand against it, but it will come back again in the end.
Tonight we're supposed to be going to Pit-to-Plate! Should be fun! Current Mood: hungry
|Tuesday, June 6th, 2006|
I'm in the process of reading The Stand for the...6th time I believe. I have made it a tradition to read it every summer, and each time it seems I pick up on something new. For example, last night I'm lying in bed reading, when I come across two quotes that really stuck with me that I decided to write them down. And now, I will share them:
"Develop a little self righteousness. A lot of that is an ugly thing, God knows, but a little applied over all your scruples is an absolute necessity. It is to the soul what a good sun-block is to the skin."
"You can measure the strength of any society's faith by how much that faith weakens when its empirical object to removed."
Reds increased their winning streak to 5 with a come from behind victory over the Cards last night.

|Home sweet Home
After a 14 hour car trip, Laura and I arrived safely in Ohio. It sure is nice to be home. I hope I didn't on Laura's nerves too much during the trip. But being in close quarters for that long of a time is bound to ruffle some feathers now and again. Overall, it wasn't that bad of a trip, and I sure appreciated the ride!
The Analysis qual didn't go as smoothly as the Algebra. It's possible I Qualled it, but fairly doubtful. Cross your fingers folks!
In other news, The Reds have completed a 3 game sweep of the Astros. Next on the board is The Cardinals.

|One down, one to go.
Well the Algebra Quall was...easier than I thought it would be. I think back on it, and I can't think of anything I did wrong or could have mader clearer. Of course that probably means I bombed it, but at least I'm not scared or anything.
Now on to Analysis. This could potentially be much scarier. I think I will be ok, but I worry about it quite a bit.
Reds lost (again....) to the Cubs yesterday. If it's not one thing, it's another with them. The pitching was solid for weeks, and the offense just sputtered. Then the defense would commit costly errors. Now the offensie is resurging, and the pitching has gown down hill again. They raise my expecations, only to dissapoint in the end.
"Sometimes I feel like I'm afraid of my own shadow and then, sometimes I feel as bold as Genghis Khan;
Yeah, but, I could never live in yurt on a diet of Mongolian barbeque;

Bah, silly head. Stop aching! Reds win another one, Griffy another homer. I figured I've got another meal of the Bean Soup left. It's soooo good....
I played Reversi with Laura tonight, we each won one!
Of all the parts of Real Analysis, I hate integration the most. So many details.
Oh and apparently I'm going to see the Go-Gos next month with Laura. Should be fun!
"Do you ever lose?"
"I lose. I've lost 134 times."
"You count them?"
"We count everything." Current Mood: sore

|I have....Bean Soup!
So Laura continues to be extra nice to me, and has given me some of her Bean Soup and Cornbread. It looks awesome. It'll be much better than the microwave stuff I've been having.
Quall workshops continue to plod along. I butchered one of the practice problems, and I should have gotten the first one. So silly. Otherwise, I think it was fine. Now...hopefully the real deal will about the same difficulty :)
Reds blew two games in a row to the Detroit Tigers. Two errors cost us the game, and lack of execution with runners on third and no-one out.
That's all I've got.
"This is Cousin Patty. He's going to be staying with us for a while. Isn't that nice?"
"You don't have a Cousin Patty!"
"You lied to me!" *clang* Current Mood: excited

Week 2 of Workshops down. We did 2 practice quals today, and I felt darn good about both of them. Good sign? I don't know.
Reds broke a string of 5 straight losses yesterday with a 6 run comeback against the Pirates.
Microwaving a mexican dish for dinner. It looked awesome!

Because she wants me to anwser some questions. Here you go:
1.Who was your first prom date?
-- I did not go to any Prom.
2. Who was your first roommate?
-- I have never had a roommate.
3. What alcoholic beverage did you drink when you got drunk the first time??
-- I've never been drunk. (And in fact, have never drank)
4. What was your first job?
-- Being a GTA at Lincoln.
5. What was your first car?
-- A black Pontiac Sunfire. I don't remember the year...I think 1999 possibly.
6. When did you go to your first funeral?
-- I've only been to one. I went to the funeral of Don Spaeth...and I'm not sure when it was. I was probably around 18.
Don was a key figure as a youth leader at the church I went to when I grew up.
7. How old were you when you first moved away from your hometown?
8. Who was your first grade teacher?
-- I don't remember.
9. Where did you go on your first ride on an airplane?
-- Florida when I was younger. But the first I can vividly remember is Nebraska.
10. When you snuck out of your house for the first time, who was it with?
-- I've never snuck out of any house.
11. Who was your first Best Friend and are you still friends with them?
-- I don't think I've ever had a "Best Friend".
12. Where was your first sleepover?
-- Hmmm. I think I spent a night at the Pinsky's (My brother was better friends with them than I was)
13. Who is the first person you call when you have a bad day?
-- I don't really call anyone. I don't really have bad days.
14. Who's wedding were you in the first time you were a bridesmaid or a groomsman?
-- I've never been a groomsman. (And to no ones shock, never been a bridesmaid either!)
15. What is the first thing you do in the morning?
-- Wake up. What a silly question.
16. What was the first concert you ever went to?
-- I went to Ichthus in...1999 I think. I believe the first band that played that day was Bleach. The first concert that was for a single artist and not a bunch of acts was Lost and Found.
17. First tattoo or piercing?
18. First celebrity crush?
19. Age of first real kiss?
20. First crush?
21. First love?
And because I'd feel guilty if I didn't actually say something important, I'm feeling much better today. The sore throat dissipated much faster than it usually does. Must be those Medicated-Vibes that Laura has been sending me. Tomorrow back to Qual Workshops.
Reds lose another close one, falling 2-1 in the 12th inning. Stop blowing leads! Please!
